Homemade Play Dough

This homemade version is soft, squishy, and safe for toddlers, perfect for creative play.

Using a splash of vinegar or lemon juice instead of cream of tartar keeps the dough elastic and smooth, without needing any special ingredients.

Soft & Elastic Homemade Play Dough

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup fine salt

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 2 cups water

  • 2 tsp vinegar or lemon juice

  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together the flour, salt, water, oil, and vinegar (plus food coloring if using).

  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the dough thickens and pulls away from the sides (about 3–5 minutes).

  3. Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then knead until smooth and soft.

Notes:

  • Keep in an airtight container or ziplock bag.

  • Lasts 1–2 weeks at room temperature.
